The same points work for one patient and not for another.

Stems and Branches is the system that tells you why: the constitutional side of Chinese medicine, written out at length by a physician who still sees twenty to thirty patients a day and checks every line of it on the pulse.

You already know the feeling

A patient comes in with a textbook picture. You take the pulse, you choose the points the syndrome calls for, you needle. Next week they are back and nothing has moved. The patient after them gets the same treatment and walks out different.

Most of us are taught to read that as a technique problem — deeper, longer, more points, a better angle. It usually is not. Two people with the same complaint are not the same person, and the textbook combination was never written for either of them.

What Stems and Branches reads

It gives you a second reading of the patient, taken before they say a word: four levels built from the moment they were born. The Great Movements. The Ten Heavenly Stems. The Twelve Earthly Branches. The Six Divisions.

Each level describes a tendency — what this person reaches for by reflex, and which energy they have the weakest contact with. Together they tell you where to look. The pulse then tells you what to do. The chart never overrules the fingers.

This is the part most people get wrong. A birth chart is not a prognosis and it is not a horoscope. It is a map of tendencies that has to hold up against the pulse like any other diagnosis — and when it does not, the pulse wins. That sentence appears in every volume of this series, because it is the difference between using this system and playing with it.

What this system does in your treatment room

1. It shows you how the meridians lean on each other.

Take the liver. Through the heavenly stems it is paired with the large intestine. Through the earthly branches, with the small intestine. In jue yin, with the pericardium. I know no other system that lays these connections out as clearly. With your fingers on the pulse you can tell which of these levels the imbalance sits on, and you treat on that level. That is what makes a treatment personal in the literal sense, and in my clinic it is where the better results come from, though not in every patient. Working on that level from the pulse is what the 2-Point Acupuncture course teaches.

2. It tells you which points of a combination belong to this patient.

A date of birth shows a person's tendencies, and those tendencies show up as meridians that run toward excess and meridians that run toward deficiency. When a textbook gives you points on four meridians, you keep the ones on the meridians that match this person. In my clinic the great majority of patients fall ill along their own meridian tendencies, so that is most likely where the illness began. The chart stays a hypothesis: if it does not agree with the pulse, the pulse wins.

3. It gives the patient something to take home.

You can tell the patient, in plain words, which level is involved and which meridian is struggling, and give them one thing to practice every day. That way they keep using, in their ordinary life, the energy the needles just strengthened.

Six volumes, one level at a time. Volume 1 is free and so is the calculator, so you can try this on your own date before you spend anything.

Start with your own date of birth.

The free calculator gives you your dominant great movement, the element it provokes, and one thing to practice for each. Everything above reads differently once it is about somebody you know.

Why this series exists

I learned this system from Joan Duveen, a student of Dr J.D. van Buren, and then from Joan himself. What I got was a two-year course, very dense, very theoretical — and almost nothing I could take into a clinic on Monday morning.

Then came five or six years of testing. What holds up, what does not. What is beautiful in a lecture and unusable at half past eight in the morning with a patient who has low back pain. This series is what survived that.

It is the material of my own twelve-hour course, written out at length — the reasoning, the five elements one by one, the ten stems one by one, the twelve branches one by one, the six divisions, and finally the whole chart drawn and read in front of you.

What you get

Volume 1 — The Energy CloudHow the system looks at a person: the cloud rather than a set of organs, the four emanations, tendencies rather than determinants, and what a treatment is actually for. 79 pages.
Volume 2 — The Great MovementsThe five elements in their active and passive version, the solar year, the life challenge, the revenge element, and five long descriptions with what I say to that patient on the couch. 94 pages.
Volume 3 — The Ten Heavenly StemsThe inner life. Each stem as a meridian inside an element, unlike qi, and ten recommendations you can give a patient the same day. 99 pages.
Volume 4 — The Twelve Earthly BranchesThe outer life: the organ clock, the hexagrams, the animals, the twelve-year cycle, the background of a meridian, and three groups of four that are in no textbook. 106 pages.
Volume 5 — The Six DivisionsAtmosphere rather than strength. How the divisions come off the branch, the two halves of the year, six descriptions, and when this level is worth touching at all. 64 pages.
Volume 6 — The Whole ChartFour levels on one sheet of paper. Notation, five real charts read line by line, and the move from chart to pulse. Plus the techniques there was no room for earlier. 84 pages.

Every volume ends with a one-page cheat sheet. The last volume carries a cheat sheet for the whole series. Both PDF and EPUB are included, so the series reads on a desk and on a phone between patients.

Who this is for — and who it is not for

It is written for acupuncturists and acupuncture students. It assumes you needle, you know the meridians, and you either take the pulse or want to learn. The boxes marked FOR THE PRACTITIONER are where the story stops and the clinic starts.

It is not written for patients, and the descriptions of people in it are a tool for talking to someone on the couch — not a way to diagnose yourself.

Yes — the points are in the books. The ten stem points by name, the four possibilities written out stem by stem with the point for each, what to do when you hit the trap, the full map for balancing off the chart, and the jing-well points for the divisions. Nothing is held back for a course. What a book cannot give you is a hand on your hand while you take the pulse — and that is the one thing the course is for.

Read a third of a volume before you decide

Three chapters are available in full, free, as a 35-page PDF: what a needle actually does, why these are tendencies rather than determinants, and one of the five elements from beginning to end. No summary, no teaser — the chapters themselves, exactly as they appear in the books.

Questions people ask

Do I need to know Stems and Branches already?

No. Volume 1 starts from how the system looks at a person, and each volume assumes only the one before it. What you do need is the clinical basics: the meridians, and a willingness to work with the pulse.

Is this the same as your course?

The books carry the whole system, points included — in places at more length than the course allows. What a live course adds is what writing cannot: the twelve pulse positions taught with your hand corrected, charts read out loud in front of you, and the questions you only think of once someone is watching you work. The books give you the system; the course gives you the hands.

Is a birth chart not just astrology?

It would be, if it decided anything. Here it decides nothing — it narrows down where to look, and the pulse settles it. Every chart in these books is read with that caveat stated out loud, and the volumes say repeatedly that a chart which does not match the pulse is wrong.

How long will it take me to read?

526 pages, so a few weeks if you read it the way it is built — one volume at a time, trying each level in the clinic before moving on. Reading all six in a fortnight is possible and, in my experience, not useful.

What format are the files?

PDF and EPUB for every volume, downloadable the moment you buy. The PDF is laid out for reading on a screen or printing A5; the EPUB reflows on a phone or e-reader.

Can I see the writing before I pay?

Yes — that is what the free chapters are for. Three of them, in full, exactly as they appear in the books. If a file will not open or the download fails, write to me and I will sort it out the same day.

Four levels, one sheet of paper, and the pulse to settle it

Twenty-five years of practice, fifteen years of teaching acupuncturists, fifteen years with this system — written down so that you do not have to reconstruct it from someone's course notes.
